The Red Light Bulb

I was always a curious little perverse Catholic boy and one day I went perusing into my mother's bedroom. I don't know what I was looking for. Maybe I wanted to see if my mother had any hint of a sex life or maybe I had a hunch she kept the 3-musketeer bars in her top dresser drawer.

What I did find to my astonishment was one, single, red, light bulb. It was like finding the Scarlet Letter "A" amongst blouses and pantyhose. "I knew it! my mother is a freak just like me!" I thought to myself. I stared at it carefully and began to think "where the heck do you buy just one red light bulb?" and "why a red light bulb?". I replaced the bulb like a fresh Miami crime scene and escaped.

As a teenager I had little social life and weeks later after returning home from a short evening of Lazer Tag I looked up to see a blood orange hue emanating from underneath my mother's bedroom. I froze. I dropped my keys heavy on the table and next I heard the ruffle of covers and within seconds the hue changed to a standard fluorescent yellow. I knew my mother's boyfriend aka stepdad was over since his Porsche was parked in my spot. However it is the light that has me curious to this day. "Why the red light?"

So this post is ode to the red light bulb. Yes I can speculate and come up with ideas about it's effect and purpose. But I choose not to. Not because it creeps me out but rather because I just like the mystery.
